Introduction

What is TM, also known as Transcendental Meditation?  According to www.tm.org, “Many meditation techniques are available today. Contrary to common belief there are distinct differences between techniques, such as the effort involved, their impact on the brain, and whether or not they result in verifiable benefits.”  With this said, TM is one type of meditation technique.  This article will explore what TM is, as well as provide readers with some of the benefits of TM.

What Is TM?

According to webmd.com, “Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a technique for avoiding distracting thoughts and promoting a state of relaxed awareness.  While meditating, the person practicing TM sits in a comfortable position with eyes closed and silently repeats a mantra. A mantra is a meaningless sound from the Vedic tradition that’s been assigned by a certified instructor.”

Absolutely Effortless

According to www.tm.org, the following can be stated:

  • Absolutely effortless — The TM technique is so easy and enjoyable that anyone can do it, even children with ADHD.
    • No concentrating
    • No control of the mind
    • No monitoring of thoughts (mindfulness)
    • No trying to “empty the mind”

This is the first benefit of TM.  To be specific, no concentrating, no control of the mind, no monitoring of thoughts, and no trying to empty the mind are required for this specific technique.
